A Quote From The Frying Pan
“Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.” – Cesar A. Cruz, Mexican poet and academic
I love this quote! It really sums up art to me. My son Malcolm introduced me to this quote just yesterday and it’s all I’ve been thinking about. It is so true and explains why a lot of art doesn’t do much for me. I guess I need to be “disturbed” to enjoy a piece of art. For example: I once saw a beautiful 6 foot square butterfly with flowers surrounding it in an art gallery. It was gorgeous, but every bit of it was made out of dead butterflies and moths. That is extremely disturbing to me, But, I will never ever forget it.
So, next time you look at art (or anything) think about this quote. Is the thing you are looking at disturbing you or making you comfortable?
Thank You Malcolm for teaching me something new almost every day!
