Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love and affection. However, it can also feel like you are in a pressure cooker. You are trying to come up with the perfect gift. Expensive chocolates, jewelry, or fragrance are nice, but they’re not always practical or memorable.
This year, why not surprise your Valentine with a unique, unexpected, memorable gift showing you care? Here are some ideas to get you started that won’t break your piggy bank!
1. The Gift of Experience:
- Plan a scavenger hunt around your town or neighborhood: Hide clues in places that hold special meaning for your relationship. Have the clues lead to a final romantic surprise. This is a thoughtful and personalized gift that requires little to no money. It will require some thought. But, isn’t that the point? “It’s the thought that counts!” Right?
- Recreate your first date: Go back to the restaurant or location where you had your first date. If that’s not possible, try to replicate the experience at home. It’s a sentimental way to rekindle the spark and relive those special memories. My hubby’s and my first date was to a bar for a drink. That bar is no longer there. Then we went to a movie. It was The Unforgiven with our favorite actor Clint Eastwood. Mr Eastwood is one of the very first things we discovered we had in common! And he just put that movie out exactly 8 days before we saw it in the theater.
- Learn a new skill together: Take an online cooking class, watch a virtual pottery demonstration (Are you thinking of the movie Ghost right now?), or try a beginner’s guide to painting. How about ballroom dancing? A great way to get close! Learning something new together can be a fun and bonding experience. The videos can be free or very low cost. Splurge on some great food and drink. Romantic evening in the books!
- Have a good laugh together. Laughter is joy. Is there anything better to do with your Valentine than to experience joy? Check out these 55 Funny Valentine’s Day Quotes. Courtesy of Country Living Magazine.
- Stargazing: Pack a picnic and find a secluded spot to stargaze together. You can download a stargazing app to learn about the constellations together. If it is cold where you live, have a picnic in the car or by a campfire.
2. Personalized Gifts:
- DIY coupon book: Fill a blank pad (or buy one) with coupons for things your Valentine will enjoy. Examples include a back rub, breakfast in bed, or a movie night of their choice. It’s a thoughtful and customizable gift that shows you put extra effort into it. Be creative and you will come up with all sorts of things to make a coupon for.
- Framed photo collage: Gather photos that capture special moments in your relationship and create a collage. This is a sentimental and affordable way to showcase your love story. A heart-shaped frame like the one found here, ties the whole Valentine’s Day theme up!
- A jar of “reasons why I love you” notes: Write down all the things you love and appreciate about your partner on small pieces of paper and put them in a decorative jar. Your Valentine can pull out a note whenever they need a pick-me-up.
3. Gifts that Give Back:
- Make a donation to their favorite charity in their name: This gesture is meaningful. It shows you support their passions and values. Attach a note about the donation to a gift that coincides with the donation. A donation to an animal shelter? Roll the note up with a ribbon and have a cute little stuffed kitty or puppy hold it.
- Plant a tree in their honor: This is a symbolic and eco-friendly gift that will grow with your love. Many parks and preserves would love for you to help them plant a tree. Or you can even do this in your own backyard.
- Volunteer together: Give back to your community by volunteering at a local animal shelter, food bank, or other charitable organization. Spend some quality time together while giving back to your community. Hey, maybe the two of you will find a cat or dog you can give a forever home to. Wouldn’t that be an extremely special Valentine’s Day?
4. Foodie Delights:
- Bake your Valentine a batch of cookies or brownies: Homemade treats are always a welcome gift. They show you put time and effort into making something special. Even if you use a mix they will still love them and you! Don’t forget to decorate the treats.
- Create a coffee or tea basket: Get a beautiful basket or box. Line it with a nice kitchen towel. Layer different coffee, teas, or hot cocoa and a nice mug or tea cup. Coasters, napkins, whatever you think they may like. A dollar store can really come in handy for this gift.
- Host a dinner party with friends: Each couple brings a different course, making it a fun and social way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
5. The Gift of Relaxation:
- Give the gift of a massage at home: Learn a few basic massage techniques. Use a massage oil or lotion to create a relaxing spa experience at home. Have some classical music playing in the background and offer heart-shaped appetizers and wine or sparkling juice. Aromatherapy? Yes! Make it as spa-like as possible.
- Help them create a relaxing bath: Draw a warm bath, add some Epsom salts and essential oils, or bath bombs. Light some candles to create a tranquil atmosphere.
- Give your Valentine a self-care kit: Put together a basket filled with bath bombs, facial masks, cozy socks, a comfy robe, and their favorite relaxing beverage. Oh, and a Teddy Bear wouldn’t hurt. Everyone loves Teddy Bears!
These are just a few ideas to get you started. With a little creativity, you can find the perfect gift for your Valentine, even on a budget.
