Getting healthier in mind, body, and spirit doesn’t have to mean big changes or strict routines. Sometimes, it’s just one small choice, one gentle step that makes the next day feel a little lighter. This month – or whenever you’re ready – try something simple: one doable habit each day. No pressure, no perfection. Just kindness, consistency, and a little self-encouragement.
Here’s a warm, realistic list of daily ideas. You can follow them in order or pick what feels right each day. Have fun with it!
30 Days of Realistic Habits
1. Drink 8 ounces of water right after you get up in the morning (unless you need to visit the potty first!😉). I leave a filled glass of water out on the kitchen counter every nght so it isn’t too cold in the morning.
2. Work in one extra serving of veggies today. Think ½ cup cooked or 1 cup raw – totally doable!
3. Swap one snack for something that makes your body feel good after eating it. Fresh or frozen red raspberries are a great choice!
4. Switch one of your usual sweet or creamy coffees for a simple cup of black. Over time, little changes like this can really make a difference in your calorie intake. The average flavored coffee has between 150 to 200 calories. Black coffee has less than 1 calorie per cup!
5. For one meal today, set aside distractions. No screens, no reading, no TV or talk radio. Just you and your food. Notice how each bite tastes and feels. It’s a quiet way to slow down and savor.
6. Take a little extra time today to make yourself a real and healthy breakfast. Don’t just grab a doughnut. It only takes a few minutes to make a delicious bowl of oatmeal or muesli. Spread mashed avocado on toast with or without an egg. Scramble up some eggs (chicken or Vegan) and add some nutritious veggies. Show yourself that you love YOU!!!
7. Try a new fruit or veg you have never had or haven’t had in a while. You may just discover a new favorite!
8. Do a 5-minute stretch before bed. Unless you are a very active dreamer your body is pretty still for 8 hours at a time. Give yourself a good stretch first.
9. Take a walk, even a short walk is beneficial. Make sure to observe something beautiful you have never noticed before.
10. Dance to one song you love, just for fun. And remember, dance like no one is watching. Maybe they will want to join you!
11. Do 12 squats while brushing your teeth, waiting for the dryer or dishwasher to finish. Fit them in when you can. Try to get up to 36 squats a day.
12. If stairs are available, take them today! If you can’t make it all the way to your destination, take the stairs for a flight or two. Every step and second of extra excercise adds up!
13. Step outside for 10 minutes of morning light. Even if you are a night owl, sunlight stirs the “good feeling” hormones and awakens the soul.
14. Write down three things you’re grateful for just before going to bed tonight. Hopefully, you will dream about them.
15. Say something kind to yourself in the mirror. “Mirror mirror on the wall, You 100% got this!”
16. Take three deep breaths before starting a task that you don’t want to do. As you breath, imagine how good it will feel when the task is completed.
17. Let yourself rest without guilt for 15 minutes today. I don’t mean take a nap (but if it happens, it happens). I simply mean sit down or stand still, close your eyes, and rest. No thoughts or worries, just rest!
18. Smile at someone today. I truly believe that a simple smile can change the world. You never know when a stranger might be having a hard day – your smile may remind them that the world isn’t as heavy as it felt a moment ago.
19. Go to bed 15 minutes earlier than usual. A little extra sleep tonight can make tomorrow so much happier and brighter! Sleep is delicious!
20. If you drink alcohol, try to avoid it for a few hours before bedtime. The same goes for food. Giving your body a little space before sleep can help the night feel more restful When your system isn’t busy digesting, it has more time to settle, heal, and restore.
21. Dim lights and turn off all screens one hour before bedtime. Bright lights effect your melatonin levels and can disrupt sleep.
22. Do a “brain dump” in a journal before bed. Write down anything that’s bothering you and let the paper hold it for the night. Those thoughts will still be there in the morning. And often what felt huge at bedtime looks much smaller after rest. Putting things on the page can also help your mind quietly sort through them while you sleep.
23. Make a “dream journal. If you wake after a dream, write it down. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate description, just a few key words that will help you recall the dream in the morning. Our dreams can often give us solutions to our problems.
24. Text someone just to say, “Hello!” No agenda! Connection gives us a boost of dopamine, the feel good hormone!
25. Declutter one tiny space today (a drawer, a corner, a bag). Decluttering physical spaces has a way of decluttering the mind and soul.
26. Apply moisturizer slowly and kindly – like a ritual. Your body is a temple. Treat it that way!
27. Celebrate one tiny win with a silly dance or a cozy treat. It’s the little things in life that matter and they all add up to a great life!
28. Say “no” to something that drains you. There is nothing wrong with saying “no” to something that could cause you stress, harm, or negativity in general. Be nice and simply say, “I’m very sorry, but I can’t do that.” Case closed!
29. Say “yes” to something that lifts you! Even if it seems silly at the moment. Just do it! You never know, you may find your new favorite hobby or activity!
30. Remember that you are love and light and no one and nothing can extinguish that! Keep that thought in your mind and heart. In times of stress, imagine a flame running through the center of your body. From the bottoms of your feet to over the top of your head. Never let that flame go out. It is your power and strength!
You don’t need to complete all 30, and perfection isn’t the goal. Pick one each day, or return to the ones that light you up. This journey isn’t about changing who you are, it’s about supporting the light that’s already within you. One steady step at a time. Here’s to a new year built on warmth, intention, and gentle strength.
