The Big Game – watched by over 100 million people – is about to kick off. My favorite team did make it this year (go Pats!), They’re tied for first place in my heart with the Bills. If your team made it too, I hope they bring you all the excitement you’re hoping for.

Whether you’re a die‑hard fan, a halftime‑show devotee, or just here for the commercials and snacks, you can still make your viewing party feel special. If you’re gathering with friends or family, there are so many fun, memorable ways to bring everyone together.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

I. Theme Your Party

One of the easiest ways to make your party stand out is to choose a theme. Sounds silly? You might be thinking, “Duh, Janny, the theme is football!” Sure… but have you ever been to a Big Game party with a theme other than football? Probably not. And that’s exactly why choosing one can make your gathering feel instantly more memorable.

Once you pick a theme – simple or over‑the‑top – everything else becomes easier. Decorations, menu ideas, even the vibe of the night all fall into place.

If you’re going for a casual, classic feel, you can absolutely lean into full‑on football mode. Think football‑shaped candles and dishes, cozy football blankets and pillows draped over the furniture, themed coasters, napkins, glasses, rugs, even football‑patterned flatware and garbage bins. Football everything!

Here are some themes to get your creative football juices flowing:

• Tailgate Extravaganza – Recreate the classic tailgate experience right in your living room. Think indoor‑friendly yard games, an electric or otherwise safe indoor grill, and all the beloved tailgate staples – sliders, wings, dips, and anything that feels like it belongs in a stadium parking lot.
• Show Your Colors – Decorate using the colors of the two teams playing in The Big Game. The Patriots bring navy blue, red, silver, and white. The Seahawks bring college blue, action green, and wolf grey. Those are some great colors to work with.
• Black Tie & Touchdowns – If you want to go delightfully over‑the‑top, host an elegant, upscale watch party. Think formal attire, candlelight, and gourmet bites. I love this idea. Imagine everyone being on their best behavior until the game gets exciting and all heck breaks loose!
• Movie Night – Perfect for East Coasters who need to fill those long hours before kickoff. Queue up classic football movies and let everyone settle in with popcorn, cozy blankets, and pre‑game nostalgia.
• The Teams’ Food – Since it’s Seattle vs. New England this year, you can build your whole menu around regional favorites. Seattle leans heavily into seafood – think crab, salmon, smoked fish spreads, chowders, and anything that feels fresh from the Pacific Northwest. New England brings its own iconic comfort foods to the table: clam chowder, lobster rolls, baked beans, brown bread, maple‑glazed anything, and of course, all the cozy classics that make you think of crisp fall days and football season in Foxborough.
• International Feast – Turn your Big Game spread into a global tasting tour. Pick dishes from different countries and let guests sample their way around the world. My vote? Mexican, every time.
• Casino Night – Add a little Vegas flair with poker, blackjack, or roulette. My husband and I have a long‑standing tradition of betting with pistachios instead of real money – highly recommended.

  • Decades (’70s, ’80s, ’90s – pick your vibe)
  • Masquerade (masks + mystery = instant fun)
  • Tropical (bright colors, fruity drinks, and a little escapism)
  • Encourage guests to dress according to the theme — it instantly boosts the energy and makes the night feel special.

Game Day Grub – Go beyond typical snacks with creative twists on game day classics.

  Wings:

• Spiced-Up Glazes: Go beyond classic buffalo. Try:
  • Korean BBQ Wings: Sweet and savory with a touch of heat.
  • Honey Garlic Wings: Sticky, sweet, and garlicky.
  • Mango Habanero Wings: Sweet mango balanced with fiery habanero.
• Dry Rubs: Get creative with dry rubs. Just make a thick paste with olive oil and one or more of these seasonings. Rub all over and into the meat. Cover and let stand in the fridge for at least one hour. Grill or bake as you normally do. Soooo good!!!
  • Cajun Spice: A classic for a reason.
  • Lemon Pepper: Bright and zesty.
  • Smoky Chipotle: Adds a smoky depth.
  • Jerk Seasoning: My favorite! The best of the Caribbean. Sweet, tangy, and wild!

Pizza:

• Unique Toppings:
  • Fig and Prosciutto: Sweet and salty with a touch of luxury.
  • Spicy Sausage and Roasted Peppers: A flavorful Italian combination.
  • BBQ Chicken: A crowd-pleaser with a smoky twist.
  • Pineapple and Pepperoni: Sweet, salty, and amazing!
  • Pickles or Every Kind: Add them to any pizza for an amazingly different and delicious twist. Any kind of pickle will work. My favorite is Sweet and Hot.
• Different Crusts:
  • Pretzel Crust: Chewy and delicious.
  • Cauliflower Crust: A healthier and usually gluten-free option.
  • Whole Wheat Crust: Adds a touch of fiber.

Chips and Dips:

• Elevated Dips:
  • Smoked Gouda Dip: Rich and creamy with a smoky flavor.
  • Spicy Roasted Red Pepper Hummus: A flavorful twist on classic hummus. Cedar’s Foods is the best!
  • Spinach and Artichoke Dip with Goat Cheese: A decadent and flavorful choice.
• Chip Variety:
  • Sweet Potato Chips: A healthier and sweeter alternative. Crunchier, too!
  • Tortilla Chips: Go beyond plain with flavors like lime, chili lime, or jalapeno.
  • Pita Chips: A lighter and crispier option. Cedar’s Foods sells them as well.

Football Cocktails Anyone?

The Hail Mary

• 1.5 oz Vodka
• 0.5 oz Blue Curacao
• 0.5 oz Sweet and Sour Mix
• Sprite or 7-Up

Combine vodka, Blue Curacao, and Sweet and Sour Mix in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Top with Sprite or 7-Up. Garnish with a lime wedge or a maraschino cherry.

The New York Touchdown

• 1.5 oz Bourbon
• 0.5 oz Sweet Vermouth
• 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
• Orange peel for garnish

Combine bourbon, sweet vermouth, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice. Stir well and strain into a chilled rocks glass. Garnish with an orange peel

The Field Goal

• 1.5 oz Irish Whiskey
• 0.5 oz Sweet Vermouth
• 2 dashes Orange Bitters
• Orange peel for garnish

Combine Irish Whiskey, Sweet Vermouth, and Orange Bitters in a mixing glass with ice. Stir well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange peel.

III. Slow Cookers To The Rescue:

You can use a slow cooker to make a big batch of chili or stew. Want to keep hot dips hot? Done! Need some filling for tacos? You got it! This is my very favorite slow cooker. I own three of these plus at least seven others. If you have more than one slow cooker you can set up a buffet of hot dishes. Most slow cookers nowadays have a warm setting.

V. Big Game Party Hosting Tips

• Plan ahead and create a budget.
• Send out invitations in advance.
• Provide plenty of food and drinks.
• Remember to never EVER let anyone drive drunk or buzzed. Call them a taxi or Uber. Or let them stay the night. Have safe rides planned in advance. Also, encourage your guests who are indulging to drink water in between each beer or drink. Suggest wine spritzer instead of full strength wine.
• Create a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for guests.
• Most importantly, have fun!
