The Cider Doughnut As An Ingredient?: Sweet & savory ideas, very strange ones too!

One of the best parts of Autumn is the food and one of the best Autumn foods is Cider Doughnuts! Did you know that they aren’t just a delicious treat, but they can also be a versatile ingredient in many seasonal favorites?  Here are some unique ways to get even more cider doughnuts into your life!

THE SWEET

  • Cider Doughnut Crumbs: Turn leftover doughnuts (if that is possible in your house) into a delightful topping for ice cream, yogurt, or oatmeal.

  • Cider Doughnut French Toast Casserole: Combine cubed bread, cider doughnuts, eggs, milk, and cinnamon in a casserole dish, bake, and enjoy a warm and comforting breakfast or brunch. You can also cut a doughnut in half, dip in your favorite French toast batter and fry them up just like you would bread.

  • Cider Doughnut Pancakes: Add crumbled cider doughnuts to your pancake batter for a flavor-packed and delicious breakfast. Add canned apple pie filling on top. Yum!

  • Cider Doughnut Milkshake: Blend crumbled cider doughnuts with ice cream and your favorite milk for a decadent treat. Add large chunks of doughnut on top for garnish if desired.

  • Cider Doughnut Cheesecake: Incorporate cider doughnut crumbs into your favorite cheesecake batter for a flavor-filled dessert. After the cheesecake is out of the oven gently push large doughnut chunks down into the top a bit as a topping. Canned apple pie filling on top of each slice of cheesecake would be amazing!

  • Cider Doughnut Ice Cream Sandwiches: Cut cider doughnuts in half. Either use your favorite soft ice cream or soften hard ice cream. Carefully spread the ice cream on the bottom layer of doughnut. Add the top layer and you have a scrumptious new Autumn favorite.

  • Cider Doughnut Appletini: Put cider doughnut crumbs around the rim of an Appletini or you favorite Autumn cocktail. This could also be used for a simple glass of cider. You can also garnish the glass with a slice of apple or a chunk of doughnut.

THE SAVORY

  • Cider Doughnut Stuffing: Add crumbled cider doughnuts to your Thanksgiving stuffing for a sweet and savory twist.

  • Cider Doughnut Chips: Slice cider doughnuts into thin strips or wedges, toss them in a bit of olive oil and seasoning of your choice. Bake until crispy for a tasty Autumn snack.

  • Cider Doughnut Croutons: Cut leftover cider doughnuts into crouton size chunks and toss them in a bit of olive oil and seasoning. Bake for about 5 minutes at 375° for crispy, flavorful croutons. These are amazing on a fruit salad, squash soup or sweet potato casseroles.

  • Cider Doughnut Grilled Cheese: Add a slice of cider doughnut to your grilled cheese for a unique and delicious combination. Just slip the slice of doughnut between the cheese slices before grilling. Cooked apples (like the ones found in canned apple pie filling) are also a great addition. I have also seen people cut a doughnut in half and use it instead of bread. Instead of trying to spread butter on the delicate doughnut just dip it into melted butter in the same pan you are making the grilled cheese in. That’s how I make grilled cheese sandwiches all the time I can’t stand trying to spread butter on bread.

As you can see the possibilities are endless! Experiment with different flavors and textures to find your perfect cider doughnut culinary creation. But, most of all enjoy these delicious treats and all the spectacular tastes of Autumn!

EXTRA!! EXTRA!!!

Read all about it! If you dare!

I asked a very funny, smart and odd friend of mine to write an article about weird  ways to use cider doughnuts. He has a way of thinking outside the box. Well, he really thought way outside the box. The doughnut box, that is.  This is what he wrote. Enjoy! You just may get something out of his weirdness. He didn’t provide any pictures and I thought it best to use our imaginations.

I added some comments in the parentheses.

Cider Donuts Aren’t Just For Eating

(Are you sure we can spell it that way?)

Cider donuts are a delicious and popular fall baked good. But did you know that they can also be used in a variety of odd ways? Here are a few ideas:

How to Use Cider Donuts in Odd Ways

  • Use them as a coaster. Cider donuts are a great way to protect your table from spills. (Yeah, not on my table buddy!)
  • Use them as a building block. Cider donuts can be used to build towers, castles, and other structures. (Sticky, sticky STICKY!)
  • Use them as a decoration. Cider donuts can be used to decorate Christmas trees, wreaths, and other holiday items. (Great bug and mouse attractant!)
  • Use them as a toy for your best friend. Cider donuts can be used as a chew toy for dogs. (Great! You’ll have a fat dog with diabetes.)
  • Use them as a face mask. Cider donuts can be used to make a moisturizing face mask. (Oh My Gosh! The only part of the face a cider doughnut should be on is IN the mouth! And, eww! You are asking for pimples for sure!)

Tips for Using Cider Donuts in Odd Ways

  • Use fresh cider doughnuts. For the best results, use cider donuts that are fresh. (Yeah, you wouldn’t want stale doughnuts on your face.)
  • Be creative. There are no rules when it comes to using cider donuts. (I don’t think you have many rules in your life at all!)
  • Have fun! Using cider donuts in odd ways is a fun and creative way to enjoy this delicious fall treat. (I think I’ll stick to eating them. That’s fun enough for me!)

I hope you have fun using cider donuts in odd ways! Please share your ideas in the comments below. (I’ve been commenting all through this craziness!)

Additional Ideas

(Oh no! There’s actually more?)

Here are a few additional ideas for using cider donuts in odd ways:

  • Use them as a gift. Cider donuts make a great gift for friends and family. (Finally, a normal idea!)
  • Use them as a snack. Cider donuts are a delicious and healthy snack. (Another great idea! Healthy? Not too sure about that.)
  • Use them as a dessert. Cider donuts can be served as a dessert with ice cream, whipped cream, or chocolate sauce. (Really? I never knew that!)

So, there’s my friend’s contribution to the site. How’d ya’ like it? I know he wrote it as a complete joke. Probably so I’d stop bugging him to write something. I think he accomplished his goal! Joke or no joke, you may never look at a cider doughnut the same way again.

In all seriousness, cider doughnuts are delicious and can be used in many “edible” ways. Have fun experimenting with them! Maybe not as much fun as my friend, though!

Have an awesome autumn!
