Embrace Gratitude This Thanksgiving: and all year long

November is National Gratitude Month. Of course, Thanksgiving is the star and most important day for gratitude. But, I believe we should be grateful and find things to be grateful for everyday! itโ€™s easy to take life for granted. This Thanksgiving letโ€™s make a conscious effort to embrace gratitude. And appreciate the small and big things that make life beautiful and worth while. Not just on Thanksgiving, but everyday!

The Benefits of Gratitude

Practicing gratitude has numerous benefits for our mental and physical well-being. Studies show that people who regularly express gratitude experience fewer aches and pains. They feel healthier. They enjoy a greater sense of happiness and satisfaction in life overall. Gratitude helps us to focus on the positive aspects, fostering a more optimistic outlook even during challenging times. It also brings us back to the present. Instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.
Gratitude can be as simple as realizing that lifeโ€™s little annoyances are signs that you have something great in your life. Instead of complaining that the spouse or kids made a mess, be grateful that you have those people to pick up after. Instead of complaining that you are too busy with your job or business, be grateful that you have that job or business. Itโ€™s all how you look at things.

Studies also show that keeping track of the gratitude you find is helpful. It’s easy to forget the positive around us. Especially if you listen or watch the news. But, if you keep a journal you can look back on it to get a rush of happiness.

How to Start a Gratitude Journal

Starting a gratitude journal is a simple yet powerful way to cultivate gratitude. Hereโ€™s how you can start:

  1. Choose Your Journal: Pick a notebook or use a digital appโ€”whatever feels comfortable for you. You could make a journal from a scrapbook or staple pretty papers together. Whatever makes you want to write in it. There are several store-bought journals available as well.
  2. Set Aside Time: Dedicate a few minutes each day to write in your journal. Do this either in the morning or before bed.
  3. Reflect and Write: Think about your day and note down three to five things you are grateful for. It could be anything from a kind gesture from a friend to enjoying a beautiful sunset.
  4. Read it Over: When you are having a bad or stressful day get out your journal and pick a random page. Read what you wrote down. Remembering what made you feel grateful should lift your spirits and remind you of things you are grateful for now.
  5. Prompts Help: Many store-bought (paper or digital) journals include prompts to get you thinking. This can be very helpful to get the thoughts flowing.

Make Gratitude a Habit

If you donโ€™t want to or donโ€™t have the time to start a written journal, try a mental journal throughout the day. Upon waking think of the things that you get to do today that you are grateful for. All those you get to see and be with. As you go through your day take a mental note of all the little things that make you smile. All the things that make you feel something positive. When going to sleep think of what I like to call, โ€œ3 amazing things that happened today.โ€ There are always amazing things happening in our lives. Even if itโ€™s just finding the vitamin pill you dropped before the cat or dog found it. Or going into the laundry room right when the washer or dryer stopped. Hereโ€™s a good one: thinking itโ€™s time to get up and you realize you have an hour left to sleep! Thatโ€™s always an amazing thing, isnโ€™t it? I am very grateful when I lay my head on the pillow and have received no bad news that day. Gratefulness fills me up in those moments. Things to be grateful for are all around! The more that we feel gratitude the more things to be grateful for come into our lives.
